Learning through Intracortical Microstimulation and Peripheral Nerve Stimulation

BionicBreastProject_image1.jpg

What is the Bionic Breast Project?

During a mastectomy, one or both breasts are removed for the treatment or prevention of breast cancer. This operation includes cutting many of the nerves to the breast, which often results in loss of sensation or chronic pain. The Bionic Breast Project aims to restore breast sensation and mitigate pain by electrically stimulating the intercostal nerves via implanted C-FINEs.

This intervention has the potential to improve embodiment of the chest, reestablish affective and erogenous touch, reduce pain, and improve quality of life.
