A Neuroprosthesis to Restore Touch Sensation

and Reduce Chronic Pain After Mastectomy

WHAT IS THE BIONIC BREAST PROJECT?

​In collaboration with researchers at the University of Chicago, the Graczyk Lab is addressing a problem that affects over 100,000 women each year: the loss of breast sensation after mastectomy. Our objective is to understand female breast sensory function and to develop a neuroprosthetic solution to the negative sensory effects of mastectomy using bionics.

WHY DOES THIS WORK MATTER?

More than 3.8 million women in the United States today are breast cancer survivors, and about a third of them have undergone mastectomy. During a mastectomy, one or both breasts are removed to treat or prevent breast cancer. The operation cuts many of the nerves to the breast, which often causes loss of sensation and touch-based affective communication, and in many women leads to chronic pain. Intervention has the potential to improve embodiment of the chest, reestablish affective and erogenous touch, reduce pain, and improve quality of life.

How are we restoring sensation?

The Bionic Breast Project aims to restore breast sensation and mitigate pain by electrically stimulating the intercostal nerves. The Bionic Breast is an implantable, neuroprosthetic medical device that applies a combination of pressure sensor activation through implanted peripheral nerve electrodes and electrical stimulation to residual nerve.
